"Live for yourself...there's no one else more worth living for
Begging hands and bleeding hearts will only cry out for more
Well, I know they've always told you selfishness was wrong
Yet it was for me, not you, I came to write this song"
Lyrics from "Anthem" by Rush
Since I was a small child (I got better), I've been mystified by the relative ease with which others seem to inhabit their lives. As I grew older, I discovered that things weren't as they seemed. The relative ease is more a mask of hypocracy worn to make sure other people think what *you* want them to think.
I don't understand hypocracy. Words are so important, so treasured, why would they be used falsely? Why would one say something one didn't believe in with all one's conviction? Why do people try to gain an advantage over, *power* over others?
I want no power. I want to be left alone, to live quietly and simply on my terms, doing no harm and expecting no quarter to be given.
For thirty-some years, I've managed to keep my private life remarkably private. Convinced as I am that I should treat others as I would like to be treated, I don't talk about myself much in person. I used to pay a therapist good money to not listen to me. After all, what's more boring (or pushy) than listening (or having to listen to) someone else's problems?
Please forgive my pedantic streak. Writing essays came naturally; conversation is much harder.
